Sean Penn is reportedly set to play gay political icon county supervisor Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant’s adaptation of “The Mayor of Castro Street.” Matt Damon is on to play Milk’s assassin fellow supervisor Dan White.
My headline reads “risen from the dead” because this film idea was tossed around for fifteen years. Proof that Washington, DC is not the only place where ideas move glacially slow.
What put the skids on production of the film that long time ago was the controversy that erupted with Oliver Stone’s lousy treatment of gays in the movie JFK. He was originally slated to be the director of the Milk biography (with rumors that Robin Williams would play the famous supervisor), but the bad press surrounding the JFK gay-bashing caused Stone to opt out.
I think under the circumstances, perhaps the wait might be worth it.
