The Great Josef Zawinul Dies

Lengendary jazz pianist Josef (“Joe”) Zawinul died at age 75. He was a leading force in the “Electric Jazz” movement, first backing such legends as Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley, and then forming the influential group Weather Report in the 1970’s. In later years, he formed another jazz fusion band called The Zawinul Syndicate.

If he’s going to be remembered for one song, it’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” a big hit for Cannonball Adderley in the 60’s as a jazz blues instrumental and for The Buckinghams as a vocal, even with very clumsy lyrics added. For the influence of just that one song, go to YouTube and type the title. You’ll get probably a dozen or more responses.
